Reflections from life after the PhD, career opportunities in brain data science

25 November 2025

The Professional Development Workshop at SfN 2025 brought together an engaged audience of early-career neuroscientists looking to understand what their futures could look like beyond the traditional academic path. Held on 16 November at the San Diego Convention Center, the session “Life After the PhD: Career Opportunities in Brain Data Science” offered a dynamic mix of practical advice, lived experience, and honest reflections on navigating career transitions and work life balance.

The workshop featured a panel of professionals who have built impactful careers across sectors connected to neuroscience and data science:

  • Dimitri Yatsenko, PhD, DataJoint
  • Uma Karmarkar, PhD, University of California San Diego
  • Mathew Abrams, PhD, MPH, International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility (INCF)
  • Stephanie Albin, PhD, Kavli Foundation

Each panelist shared their unique journey and highlighted the ways in which rigorous training in neuroscience, data analytics, and critical thinking continues to shape their work in industry, technology, and science policy. Their stories underscored that there is no single road out of academia, but rather a wide landscape of opportunities where both scientific and soft skills are not only useful but deeply valued.

Throughout the session, participants asked thoughtful questions about stepping into industry roles, navigating uncertainty, and identifying emerging opportunities at the intersection of neuroscience and technology. The panelists offered candid advice, practical strategies, and encouragement to approach career transitions with curiosity rather than fear.

The workshop closed with informal conversations and networking, giving attendees a chance to connect directly with the speakers and each other. Many left the room with renewed confidence, clearer direction, and a deeper understanding of the many ways neuroscience training can translate into impactful careers.

If you missed the session, keep an eye out for future professional development events organized by INCF.
